Thailand to host International Chemistry Olympiad

Thailand to host International Chemistry Olympiad

Thailand is to host the 49th International Chemistry Olympiad next month which will attract whiz kids from across the world.

“The hosting reflects that Thailand’s educational standards are internationally recognised,” said Assoc Prof Tatchai Sumitra, chairman of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology.

The International Chemistry Olympiad will run from July 6 to 15 at Mahidol University’s Salaya campus in Nakhon Pathom province.

Four Thai whiz kids will represent Thailand in the event. They are  Bawornthat Boonrak and Papapat Dissaneewet from the Nakhon Pathom-based

Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Waris Chandranuwat from the Chulalongkorn University’s demonstration secondary school, and Apisara Kaveeyanan from the Triam Udom Suksa School.

Tatchai said the event will inspire Thais to pay attention to science and technology.

“This is going to be useful in the production of innovative-minded human resources and tech start-ups for the Thailand 4.0 goal,” he said.

Thailand 4.0 is about transforming the country into a value-driven economy.

Assoc Prof Piniti Ratananukul, deputy secretary general of the Promotion of Academic Olympiad and Development of Science Education Foundation, said his organisation had actively supported the development of math, science, and technology classes in Thailand.

“We also seek out and develop young talent,” he said.

During the past few decades, a number of Thai children have won medals from academic Olympiads.
