Elephants put on a show for Buddhist Lent

A Chiang Mai sub-district on Friday touted its status as Thailand’s new elephant capital by marking the beginning of Buddhist Lent with a parade of pachyderms carrying giant wax candles.

The Ban Mae Taman marching band also took part in the procession in Mae Taeng district’s Tambon Keud Chang.
The Mae Taeng Tourism Federation organised the event featuring 32 elephants in part to commemorate Ban Mae Taman’s first year being recognised as the sub-district with the largest elephant population.
The procession, with classical dancing and colourful ethnic costumes, was also aimed at upholding the annual Thai Buddhist tradition and local culture, as well as promoting unity and tourism.
