‘Mother’ of 43 stray dogs gets new home

‘Mother’ of 43 stray dogs gets new home

A businessman has thrown a lifeline to a poor 58-year-old woman who faced eviction from a plot of land where she cares for 43 street dogs she regards as her “children”.

On Thursday, the owner of the land near Puang Malai temple in Samut Songkhram’s Muang district gave Wandee Moongkhamen, who earns just Bt1,000 a month cleaning toilets, 20 days to take her dogs and leave.
After her plight was widely shared online, construction business owner Uthai Damrongthasm gave Wandee permission to keep her dogs on a 5-rai (0.8-hectare) plot of land he owns in Tambon Thaihad in Muang district free of charge.
The businessman will also provide tap water and electricity for her to use.
The new place is about 500 metres away from the temple where she has been working as a toilet cleaner.
The woman, who came from Ratchaburi to seek odd jobs in Samut Songkhram, was initially homeless, but was eventually allowed to use a plot near the bridge across Mae Klong river.
She lived there without power and water but the unnamed owner, a Bangkok resident, told her to leave because she was “causing trouble”.
Wandee said she had no place to go and she would prefer to die with her “children”.
News of Uthai’s offer brought her tears of joy on Saturday.
The businessman set conditions that the dogs must be nurtured and receive rabies vaccinations. Wandee also was asked to help look after the plot and to remain honest.
