Shops selling cheap products given time to meet TISI standards

Shops selling cheap products given time to meet TISI standards

Shops selling cheap Bt20-per-piece products will be given time to clear out goods that do not have the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) seal of approval, the institute’s secretary-general Pisit Rangsaritwutikul said on Thursday.

After the grace period, TISI officials will conduct a monthly random check and punish violators with up to one month in jail and/or a Bt5,000 to Bt50,000 fine.
The agency recently called in the operators of Bt20-a-piece shops at malls to discuss selling TISI-certified products as consumers had complained about poor quality products.

Pisit dismissed rumors on Thai social media that the shops would not be allowed to sell any items that do not have the TISI-certified label.
He said the agency would only control about 10 items, which included detergent powder, matchsticks, toys, lighters, pacifiers, food-wrapping plastic film rolls, solid alcohol and crayons.
Pisit said the strict control would also cover other shops such as Daiso franchises.
There were 500 to 600 shops selling cheap Bt20-per-piece products across the country, which are supplied by some 100 wholesale shops.
