Finance Ministry considers cafeteria face-recognition payment
The Finance Ministry is considering launching a pilot program testing a payment system that uses face recognition, said Chakkrit Parapantakul, deputy permanent secretary, on Friday.
However, Somchai Sujjapongse, the ministry’s permanent secretary, has not yet approved the pilot project, which would take place at the ministry’s cafeteria, Chakkrit added.
The face pay system is said to be cost-effective, and is the latest in electronic payment technology, he said.
To use it, customers must first register for an electronic wallet and record their faces electronically. Food stalls would need to install face-reading machines, but the cost would not be high, Chakkrit assured.
The government has been promoting e-payment systems, urging people to go cashless by using debit cards or QR Code applications.
The Finance Ministry has not yet officially endorsed face pay. However, if things go as planned, the system will be launched on August 18 at the Ministry’s cafeteria, said Chakkrit.
