Three sick after H1N1 outbreak in refugee camp

Two children and a teenager have fallen sick after an outbreak of the 2009 H1N1 influenza at the refugee camp in Sop Moei district of Mae Hong Son province.

The outbreak at the Mae La Ma Luang refugee camp prompted Mae Hong Son Governor Suebsak Iamwicharn to issue an urgent order on Wednesday prohibiting officials of all charities and NGOs from entering and leaving the camp until the situation returns to normal in order to control the disease.
The order was sent to offices of NGOs working for the camp.
The order stated that the Sop Moei district and the camp management were informed by the Malteser International (MI) Thailand that there were three cases of H1N1 patients, confirmed by Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine.
The governor’s order said he had instructed the Sop Moei public health office to work with the MI organisation to try control the outbreak.
As an immediate measure, acting Sop Moei district chief Wipassakorn Kitikham has coordinated with the district public health office to send a team of doctors and nurses to spray disinfectants at the field hospital, living quarters and shanty houses in the camp.
Access to the camp will be shut until September, Wipassakorn said.
