Volunteer Pattani ranger shoots self

A Pattani-based volunteer para-military ranger reportedly shot himself dead while visiting his family's home in Nong Khai’s Muang district on Thursday morning.

Following the 9.30am report of a possible suicide by shooting, police found the dead body of Kattasorn Thonadech, 29, in his bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head and a pistol nearby.
Kattasorn’s mother Ubonpan, 56, told police that her son, who had not yet married, applied for the ranger job in 2015 and then served under the Army’s 43rd Ranger Division at Pattani’s Nong Chik district.
She said that he had just recently visited the family. Ubonpan had just bought him a motorcycle and they had gone together to a meditation camp last week. She said her son often complained of insomnia and stress for which he also used sleeping pills to deal with the symptoms.
The mother thought Kattasorn committed suicide at around 8am over stress from work and thus didn’t see any reason for police to pursue the case.
