Ban on monkey feeding on Samut Songkhram road proposed after several killed by vehicles

Local residents and online users have called on the Samut Songkhram provincial administration to ban motorists from feeding wild crab-eating macaques on a road after several of the monkeys were hit and killed by passing vehicles.

Residents said many macaques emerged daily from mangrove forests to wait for food from motorists at certain sections on the Bang Kaew-Don Hoi Lod road, including at the front of Queen Sirikit Park in Tambon Bang Kaew, Mueang district.
They said several of the monkeys had been run over and killed by vehicles, while others raided the homes of local residents.
They have proposed that a safe area be designated for tourists to feed the monkeys, away from the road and houses.
On Sunday, a Facebook user under the account name “Green Koel Is-flying” posted a picture of a macaque that had been run over by a vehicle.
He said that feeding of the wild monkeys should be banned and there should be road signs to warn motorists to slow down at the area where the animals emerge from the mangrove forest.
The location is on a curve and motorists are unable to see monkeys on the road in time to stop, he added.
