Student suspect must prove he is ill, say police

Police have demanded evidence of illness from a medical student who has cited health problems for his inability to answer a summons.

This medical student is accused of poisoning a dog in the hope of demanding compensation from a transport service provider.
“He can’t just use health problems as an excuse without substantiating that claim,” Pol Lt-Colonel Seubpong Karuna, a deputy superintendent at Bangkok’s Suttisarn Police Station, said on Monday.
The station has summoned the suspect to report on Tuesday to acknowledge the charges of animal torture and attempted fraud.
But the student’s lawyer has contacted the station asking for postponement of his surrender. His medical school earlier this month announced that the suspect had some mental health problems.
“We need to see proof of his health problems in writing. Or else, we may consider seeking an arrest warrant,” Seubpong said.
Watchdog Thailand and the transportation firm lodged a complaint with the Suttisarn Police Station against the medical student on September 9.
This is on top of a complaint filed by livestock officials in Nakhon Ratchasima province.
