Reprieve at Phitsanulok school as four teachers retire

Pupils at a small school in Phitsanulok were told not to despair as all of its four permanent teachers are due retire at the end of the month, Phitsanulok Primary Education Service Area Office 3 acting director Udom Saitho said on Wednesday, after his office recruited two replacements.

The two teachers – one from the Khru Keun Thin project and another a state employee – are supposed to begin work on Monday, he said. The office would also recruit one more teacher for the school, Udom said.
Udom’s comments responded to an earlier report in which Pracha Samakkhi School in Prom Phiram district called for volunteers to help teach 51 schoolchildren enrolled.
The report stated that a single teacher had been hired with a school budget of just Bt5,000, while Chamlong Mayu, 63, who retired from teaching at the school three years ago, had also offered help.
The four retiring teachers, Chairat Thongnoi, Anan Kongthong, Chatmankom Suwanno and Patchara Mayu, would have left just the director, Preecha Tunapong, in charge and one temporary teacher, Thassanee Yimprasert, 25.
Once the other teachers leave, Thassasnee said, she would be able to handle classes by herself and she was hoping volunteers would fill the gap regardless of their profession.
Fourth grader Panuwit Intharakamhaeng, 10, said all five students in his class were worried about the situation. “Who will teach us?” he asked.
