Volunteers begin work for Royal Cremation Ceremony

Some of the volunteers who will assist at the Royal Cremation Ceremony for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej began their work on Friday by repainting the Phan Pipop Leela Bridge and cleaning nearby areas.

The government has invited officials and members of the Thai public to register as volunteers throughout the month of September to assist in eight tasks for the historic event. The choices include making cremation flowers, helping with public relations, construction, transportation, public services, medical services, security and traffic. 
As of September 26, the number of registered volunteers nationwide was more than 285,000. It was expected that by the end of application period on September 30 the volunteer numbers would be more than 350,000, according to Interior Ministry's Community Development Department chief Apichat Todilokwet. 
Apichat earlier said that 281,000 volunteers were the department's officials and community network members. 
Each volunteer will formally receive a special ID card, cap, scarf, polo shirt and armband on October 7.
