Sisaket students in City Hall uproar over school director

Sisaket Sports School had its entire 300-strong student body march on City Hall on Monday morning to demand that the school’s director be thrown out.

The province’s governor was formally requested to take action against Sermsak Sopha, who was accused of refusing funds for sports competitions, forcing parents to dig into their own pockets, and then claiming expenses from the Tourism and Sports Ministry – money the students alleged he kept for himself and his circle of friends.
The students also told Capt Thawil Chuenphet, the governor’s representative, that Sermsak condoned drug peddling at the school.
Sports schools, where the focus is on athletics, fall under the jurisdiction of the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
The students marched past the downtown fresh market and railway station to City Hall, where they shouted their demand that the director be removed.
Thawil invited eight student representatives inside to submit their complaints and asked everyone else to return to their school, but they refused while the discussion continued inside.
The students agreed to return aboard buses provided only after Thawil promised to forward their appeal to the governor.
