Mourning areas on Royal cremation day to feature tight security

AN additional 29 screening spots will be set up in Bangkok’s inner area on October 26, the Royal cremation day for the late King, to accommodate the expected large number of mourners, Pol Maj General Montree Yimyam, deputy metropolitan police chief, said yesterday.

The additional spots include the Sapanmorn intersection, Thachang, Thammasat University, Kalayanamaitree Road, Ta Tien and Taprachan. Those who want to participate in the ceremony will have to show their identity card at the screening spots and their belongings will be searched.
Those who arrive at the screening before opening time or before 5am on October 25 will have to wait outside the gates until the official opening time.
Meanwhile Kriangkrai Jongcharoen, assistant Bangkok permanent secretary, said that food would be available at 22 spots and 62 bigscreen televisions would be set up for people in faraway areas. Moreover, Bangkok authorities are also preparing 70 mobile toilet vehicles as well as 150 mobile toilets for the mourners.
“We will also install 53,114 security cameras in 50 districts of Bangkok with 1,147 of them at Sanam Luang where the Royal cremation is held,” said Kriangkrai.
Dr Narong Apikulwanich, deputy director general of the Medical Service Department, said that 21 teams of emergency medical staff would be deployed around Sanam Luang and medical staff would mingle in the crowd.
