Drug smuggling suspect claims romantic motive

A Nakhon Ratchasima man arrested in Udon Thani’s Nam Som district for smuggling a large shipment of marijuana on Saturday night claimed he needed the money to travel to South Korea where his estranged wife had fled to find a job to reconcile with her.

During a press conference on Sunday at the Seneeronnayuth Military Camp in Udon Thani’s Muang district, police and Army officers announced that Nirut Sudsawat had been arrested with 300 kilograms of medium-graded marijuana in a Mitsubishi Pajero car following a tip-off about drug smuggling from a neighbouring country for delivery to Pathum Thani.
The Pajero car, registered in Pathum Thani, was suspected to belong to Nirut’s employer.

Construction contractor Nirut reportedly told police that he did not have any work in construction so he started transporting drugs.
He said he had done similar deliveries twice before, being paid Bt20,000 the first time and Bt50,000 the second. He also said he needed the money to reunite with his estranged wife in South Korea.
Police found that Nirut had hundreds of thousands baht being deposited in and withdrawn from his bank account.
