An 81-year-old woman was killed when fire engulfed her house in Nonthaburi province on Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Sompong Pongsawat.

Pol Colonel Pannaphat Dejchotpisit, commander of Muang Nonthaburi Police Station, said the fire broke out at the house on Soi Krungthep-Non 2 at 8.30am and fire engines arrived at the scene soon after. The fire was put out in about an hour before it could spread to neighbouring houses.

Sompong’s daughter-in-law told police that she heard an explosion when Sompong was cooking in the kitchen. She said she ran downstairs to check and saw Sompong run out but she ran back into the kitchen again and did not come out when the fire had already spread through the house.

The daughter-in-law believes Sompong forgot her purse so she ran back in to fetch it.

Pannaphat said police are still checking the cause of the fire.
