Seven wild elephants including two babies were successfully rescued from drowning in a pond in Chachoengsao’s Tha Takiab district, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

In its Facebook post on Sunday, the department said that the seven elephants, apparently in search of food, got lost and trespassed on a rubber plantation of the Ban Ang Ta Pheung village in Tambon Khu Yai Mee around 2am. They fell into a pond with a steep and slippery embankment and were unable to get back out.

Decha Nilvichien, chief of the Ang Ruenai wildlife sanctuary, led a team of officials to aid the animals, which were only keeping their heads and trunks above water, according to the Facebook post.

After officials used a backhoe to dig a shallower path through the side of the pond, the elephants were able to pull themselves up and out of the water around 8.40am, Decha said.
Sanctuary officials followed the elephants from a distance as they returned to the forest.
