Authorities raid market to seize contraband wildlife

Authorities confiscated protected birds and the carcasses of other animals from a border market in Nong Khai province on Sunday.

Officials from relevant units conducted a search at the market near the Thai-Lao checkpoint for border trade in Ban Peng Jarn, in the province’s Rattana Wapee district, following reports that wildlife and carcasses were being illegally sold there.
Six red-whiskered bulbuls and two common hill mynas, as well as the carcasses of two lesser mouse deer, one lesser giant flying squirrel and two civet cats worth more than Bt10,000 were found.
“No one claims responsibility for this stuff. But we will investigate further who is involved in the illegal trade,” said Prasit Buddhabucha, the head of the Nong Khai wildlife checkpoint.
