Yangon needs more gas from PTTEPI field

Yangon region will need 80 million cubic feet of natural gas from the Aung Thinkha gas field explored by PTTEP International Limited in the coming two years, Kyaw Kyaw Hlaing from Myanmar’s electricity and energy sector development committee has informed Vice President Myint Swe.

This is because gas production at Yadanar, which is Yangon’s main supply, will decline in 2020, according to an announcement from UMFCCI earlier this week.
The Ministry of Electricity and Energy is planning to supply more gas from the Padamyar gas project to cover the gas decline.
He said the production-sharing contract currently in use will be economically beneficial only if a lot of gas is produced. The authorities will need to draw a marginal field contract for a low gas production field to have economic benefit, he added.
The government needs to explore inland gas field such as those in Ayeyawady region to fulfill the need, he said.
Zeya Thura Mon from the committee said the Myanmar government needs to implement a renewable energy policy and strategy, an energy regulatory commission policy and strategy, an IPP policy, a corporatisation policy and an Asian energy interconnection policy to meet the energy requirements.
He advised the government to carry out a tariff policy for Yangon metropolitan area, and added that the respective departments under the ministry need to build small and medium-sized private hydropower plants under contract.
