Abhisit, Chuan mourn death of Surin Pitsuwan

Democrat Party elites on Thursday expressed sorrow over the demise of Surin Pitsuwan, former foreign minister and former Asean secretary-general, who passed away following an acute heart attack at the age of 68 on Thursday

“I learned of Surin’s departure with great shock,” party leader and former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on his official Line account. “This is the loss of a person who was prestigious to not only the Democrat Party but also to the country and global society.”
“He was a person full of knowledge, capability and firmness in ideology, which becomes rarer to be found in political arena,” Abhisit added.
“It is sad that we have lost another good and efficient politician, who served the country and its people,” wrote another former prime minister, Chuan Leekpai, via Line.
Surin’s funeral will take place at 1pm tomorrow at Tha It Mosque in Nonthaburi province.
Surin’s last public appearance was on Wednesday, only a day before his departure. On his Facebook page, Surin posted photos of his visit to HUBBA, a start-up company that provides working space in Bangkok.
He suggested that the government sector be quick to provide facilities to support the growing number of digital nomads, who see the capital as their number one working destination.
“I think if our country can create the best co-working space in Asia with sufficient facilities, we can attract more digital nomads and create more opportunities for Thai people to engage, exchange and build global-level businesses,” he wrote. “Start-ups in Thailand should have gone further and faster than they are doing now.”
