PEOPLE ACROSS Thailand yesterday honoured His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on his birthday by doing good deeds, including giving alms to monks, distributing free food and medical treatment, and donating blood.

The late King was born on December 5, which is Father’s Day as he was considered father of the nation.

Free health check-ups were also offered in Bangkok at Chulalongkorn University and the Thai Red Cross Society in commemoration of Father’s Day and the birthday of King Bhumibol. The services, which ended at noon, saw many turn out at the hospital to receive tests for cholesterol and blood glucose levels and undergoing electrocardiography, cervical cancer screening, vision and hearing tests and even teeth cleaning.

Businesspeople set up 200 booths near the clinic on Niwat Road to distribute free food and beverages.
Sonthaya has offered free services twice a year since 1995, on December 5 and July 18, and it is estimated that he and the other medical practitioners, all of whom give of their time for free, have treated 20,000 people in that period.
