Prayut signs order to extend administrative deadline for parties

Junta chief Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has signed an order via Article 44 to extend the deadline for political parties to proceed with some of the legally required administrative works despite the political ban order remaining in effect.

Activities allowed for political parties will be stated in the order, which will be published in the Royal Gazette at a future date.
Politicians earlier called for the junta to lift the order to ban them from conducting party activities that require a gathering of five or more people.
They pointed to the requirement of the Political Party Act, which came into effect in early October, that they update their party membership lists and submit them to the Election Commission within 90 days after the promulgation. That deadline would be up on January 5, 2018. With the ban on political activities, they will not be able to legally convene meetings to update the membership, politicians said.
