Call to help dogs left out in the cold in Buriram

A dog lovers’ group in the northeastern province of Buri Ram has called for the authorities to help about 100 abandoned dogs after five of them reportedly died due to the cold weather.

Wanchai Boonsatapanapong, a representative of the group, said increasing numbers of dogs had been abandoned at an empty place in Muang district over the past two years. There are now almost 100 dogs, including puppies, he said.
People who felt sorry for the dogs regularly visited to give them food but this became more difficult as the number of animals increased.
They formed a group to take care of the dogs, including paying for sterilisation from their own pockets. They also made simple shelters for them, Wanchai said. When the dogs were sick, the group would take them to vets who sometimes provided free treatment.
“Now the weather is becoming so cold, some of the dogs – mostly puppies – died because they could not tolerate the weather. We would like the authorities to provide help for the animals and we call on people to stop abandoning their dogs,” he said.
