Fire destroys chapel in revered Mae Hong Son temple

The chapel of a much-revered temple in the tourist destination of Pai in Mae Hong Son province was destroyed by a fire early on Saturday.

Police said the fire started at the chapel of Wat Phra That Mae Yen in Tambon Mae Hee at around 3.30am. The old temple is also a popular tourist destination in Pai district.
After the fire broke out, Churairat Chanprom, head of Ban Mae Yen village, led villagers to fight the blaze and called the Mae Hee tambon administration and Tambon Wieng Taio municipality to send fire engines.
Fire-fighters took about two hours to control the blaze but by then it had destroyed the entire chapel, with the exception of three Buddha images.
Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
