Plantation baby delivered by acclaimed ‘borderlands’ doctor

Plantation baby delivered by acclaimed ‘borderlands’ doctor

A Cambodian migrant worker gave birth prematurely to a baby girl while she was working at a sugarcane plantation in Sa Kaew’s Aranyaprathet district on Sunday morning.

The unnamed woman who was eight month’s pregnant suddenly developed labour pains at 7am while working at the plantation in Tambon Tabprik near the Thai-Cambodia border along with her husband and fellow workers.
The plantation owner called Tambon Thabprik Health Promotion Hospital director Wichit Khamkrai, who was tending his nearby orchard, and asked that he bring a child-delivery tool from the hospital and aid the woman.
The woman then gave birth at the plantation to a 2.5 kilogram baby girl before both the mother and newborn were rushed to hospital for further care.
In November 2014, Wichit successfully performed an early morning emergency birth for a Cambodian migrant worker in the hospital’s front yard, a story widely shared in Thai social media at the time. Wichit, also praised as “the health station doctor of the borderland” was a recipient of the Justice Ministry’s “Khon Dee Khong Phaendin” (the land’s good people) award in 2011.
