‘City mangrove forest’ opens in Rayong

‘City mangrove forest’ opens in Rayong

A 500-rai mangrove forest in the middle of Rayong’s Muang district was officially transferred to the care of local residents on Sunday, according to Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) director-general Jatuporn Buruspat.

The “mid-city” mangrove forest, also known as the “Chedi Klang Nam Mangrove Forest”, is equipped with two piers and a walking trail for nature study. It will serve as a learning centre for members of the public about the benefits and function of mangrove forests.
Jatuporn said that forest was developed from a mangrove forest area in Tambon Pak Nam and Tambon Noen Phra by collaboration between the Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Management 1 in Rayong, the Rayong Provincial Administrative Organisation, the Nakhon Rayong Municipality, the Tambon Noen Phra Municipality, IRPC PCL, SCG Chemicals, BLCP Power Lted, PTT Global Chemical and a network of local communities.
The Rayong mangrove forest has been developed since October 16 last year as part of the Natural Resource and Environment Minister General Surasak Karnjanarat’s policy for related agencies to proceed with the “Forest in City” scheme. The plan is to develop land plots in their possession into green areas that people can use directly and indirectly, through such activities as exercise or learning about nature.
Buri Ram’s Khaokradongfai park was unveiled last year as the first site under the scheme.
Some 246,000 rai of land nationwide under the DMCR, the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant
