Royal winter festival to evoke the ‘good old days’

The royally-initiated winter festival, Oon Ai Rak Klay Kwam Nao, will kick off today at the Royal Plaza and Sanam Suea Pa in Bangkok.

Visitors are required to wear polite dress, not necessarily traditional Thai costumes, as shorts, sleeveless blouses and sandals will not be allowed.

Thai visitors must produce their national identification card and foreign visitors must present their passports at screening points before they can enter the festival’s compound. There are four screening points 
Initiated by HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn, the festival will features beautiful flower orchards, impressive structures, a fair plus performances that will remind people of the good old days.

Held until March 11, the festival will be open from 10.30am to 9pm from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, it will run from 10.30am to 10pm. 
Wittaya Yamuang, a representative of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, said on Wednesday that visitors could ride a shuttle bus to the venue. 
“We have prepared two shuttle routes. One is between Sanam Luang and the Suan Misakawan Intersection. The other is between the Royal Turf Club of Thailand (Sanam Ma Nang Lerng) and Sanam Suea Pa,” he said. The shuttles will run from 9am to 10pm, with buses leaving every 10 minutes.

He added that there would be special bus routes for the festival. The first one starts from the Chatuchak Bus Terminal and will stop at the Uthong Nai Intersection. The second runs from the Victory Monument to the Wat Benchamabophit Intersection. The third starts from Wong Wian Yai and will drop at the Wang Daeng Intersection. 
The fleet for these routes will stop at every bus-stop along the way. 
“If you wish to come to the festival by private car, you may park your vehicle at the Royal Turf Club of Thailand or the Dusit Zoo,” he said.

Traffic Police Division’s commander Pol Maj-General Thirasak Suriwong said one traffic lane on the Uthong Nai and the Si Ayutthaya roads next to Suan Amporn and Sanam Sua Pa would be closed 24 hours a day during the festival period. 
“One-way traffic will be arranged on the Rajdamnoen Nok Avenue between 9am and 10pm,” he added. 
Thirasak said traffic on the Si Ayutthaya Road would also be closed between 6pm and 10pm during the festival period for its portion between the Wat Benchamabophit Intersection and the Phon Intersection. On Rajdamnoen Nok Avenue, traffic would be closed between 6pm and 10pm during the festival for the portion between the Royal Plaza Intersection and the Misakawan Intersection. 
Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Maj-General Montree Yimyam said the festival venue should be able to accommodate about 50,000 people at a time. 
“We will deploy 1,619 patrolmen in the area,” he said.
