‘No need for panic’ over Songkhla jellyfish attacks

There’s no need for alarm over the bluebottle jellyfish that stung more than 20 swimmers at two Songkhla beaches earlier this week, the chief of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department said on Wednesday.

Jatuporn Buruphat said officials of the southern coastal research centre had inspected the beaches and found no reason for concern.
Jatuporn said strong waves resulting from northeast monsoon winds had carried the jellyfish to the shoreline.
He said the bluebottle jellyfish does inflict a poisonous sting, but more than 2,000 government officials and private-sector employees have been trained in its treatment.
And officials at 200 beaches in the southern provinces always keep vinegar on hand as part of the first-aid treatment.
