Huge haul of contraband found at Chon Buri port

The Customs Department has announced its success in intercepting contraband, pornographic material and e-cigarettes, as well as processed Burmese rosewood, Siamese rosewood and other hardwood logs that were prohibited for export.

The total value of the smuggled goods was Bt240 million.
In the first bust, 1,884 logs – worth about Bt9 million in Thailand but up to Bt100 million at their destination – were found in six containers at the Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri. These were falsely declared as canned fruit and other food products, said the port customs office director Yutthana Pulpipat.
Officials suspected that this batch of wood might be linked to a gang behind another shipment discovered last month at Bangkok Port, he said. The smugglers in the earlier case used forged documents to claim the shipment contained canned fruit, so they could waive an X-ray test before loading the wood onto cargo ships
In the most recent bust, customs officials seized a container that was about to cross into Laos after it was deemed to have the same origin as, or be linked to, the many containers previously intercepted at Bangkok Port for carrying falsely-declared products.
They found that this container carried 130,000 items carrying fake logo such as shoes, women’s clothing, watches, cosmetics and car parts, as well as a number of silicone dildos, e-cigarettes and e-liquid bottles. These items were said to worth Bt140 million at their destination.
