Mu Koh Similan National Park officers have rescued a green sea turtle that laid eggs on Nui Beach but was too exhausted to return to the sea.

Mu Koh Similan National Park chief Ruamsin Manajongprasert said national park officers at Miang Island had received a report from a tour guide that tourists had found a big turtle on Nui Beach.

The turtle, which is about one metre long, was found under a tree on the beach, appearing too exhausted to return to the water
Officials said they believed the turtle might have laid its eggs on Sunday.
They helped it back to the sea and cordoned off the area where the eggs were believed to have been laid, as moving them could risk damaging them since they had been laid days before.

“The area where the eggs are is safe enough to let them hatch naturally. There will be officers stationed near the area to ensure safety. This is the second green sea turtle that laid eggs on Miang Island in the Similan Islands this year,” Ruamsin said. “About 10 days ago, there was another that laid 108 eggs but we still can’t identify the type of turtle so will have to wait for the hatchlings. Those 108 eggs have been moved to a nursing pond already.
“I am very glad. There hadn’t been any turtles laying eggs on Miang Island for a long time,” he added.
