Myanmar man drowns in boat accident

A Burmese fisherman drowned on Tuesday after his fishing boat sank when its anchor was stuck in a reef near Maithon Island.

Phuket Marine Police received a report that a fishing boat “Chok Ubon” had sunk on the north side of Maithon Island before another fishing boat came to their rescue. A 38-year-old man, Stomping Rungsuwan, was rescued from the water. Stomping said another person, a 45-year-old man called “Mira”, was also missing.

On Thursday afternoon, the marine police received a report that the missing man’s body had been found floating just off the coast of Maithon Island. His body has been sent to Vachira Hospital for an autopsy.
Stomping said he and “Mira” had together struggled to pull up the anchor but they fell in the water when a wave struck their boat.
Stomping said he had managed to grab some floating steel drums. He said he saw the Myanmar man grab a foam box cover but a strong wave swept the cover from his hands and he drowned.
The boat has been recovered and brought ashore.
