‘Dangerous’ vagrant believed behind attack on woman outside police HQ

Police are seeking a man seen in CCTV footage using a stick to attack a young woman from behind just yards from the National Police headquarters in Pathumwan district of Bangkok.

The incident took place on Wednesday at 11am.
The footage – uploaded by the woman's mother to Facebook – showed the woman running for her life to the police HQ where an officer helped her.

She suffered minor injuries to her arm and neck and has been discharged from hospital. She later filed a complaint with Pathumwan police.
The woman’s mother, Noppawan Nantakit, said her daughter is a third-year student at Kasetsart University and there was no apparent motive for the attack.

The footage clearly shows a man’s face. He is believed to be 35-40 years old and 170-centremetres tall, said a source from within the police investigation on Friday.
The source said the man appeared to be mentally ill, had been wandering around the area and is not believed to have had a previous dispute or conflict with the student victim.
Police ask that the public be careful if they encounter the man, who is assumed to be dangerous.
A police inspection of CCTVs footage captured around the area revealed that after the attack the man entered the police HQ and shook a door before being expelled.
He was later seen near an entrance gate to the police HQ on Henri Dunant Rd, where he removed his black “Chelsea” jersey with the No 9 on the back and left it inside a police van parked nearby. He then walked half-naked along Henri Dunant Road before appearing in later footage wearing a grey T-shirt.
Photos captured from CCTV footage have been posted by police around Hua Lamphong train station and areas where homeless people are known to stay.
Police have also received a tip that the man was often seen in Lumpini Park.
The public is asked to immediately report any sightings to police.
