Pattaya police defend volunteer who pulled motorcycle key

A volunteer police worker, who was seen in a viral video clip pulling the key of a motorcycle ridden by two foreign tourists at a Pattaya City intersection, was just performing his duty to stop “intoxicated” motorists and warn them of accident risks, the precinct police chief said on Thursday.

Chon Buri Muang Pattaya superintendent Pol Colonel Apichai Krobphetch said the volunteer was instructed by police to keep a check on foreigners who stopped beyond the traffic line while waiting for the green light. He said due to a shortage of breathlysers, volunteers have not been given the device to help detain offenders.
The incident, which happened at the Thepprasit intersection, was captured with a smartphone camera by a passer-by who also told the volunteer he had no right to pull the motorcycle key. The volunteer also was told that if he wished to arrest tourists for drunk driving, he must have a breathalyser. So the volunteer gave the foreigners a verbal warning before letting them go.
