Man charged with forging ID cards for migrant workers

A man was arrested in Bangkok on Wednesday for allegedly producing pink identification cards for illegal migrant workers.

Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Lt-General Charnthep Sesawet said Ekkachai Yairayong, 47, was arrested at his shop on Soi Isaraparp 31 in Bangkok Yai district. Police seized 10 fake pink cards, a computer, printer and laminating machine.
Pol Colonel Pornsak Laorujiralai of the bureau’s Intelligence Analysis and Special Tools Sub-Division, said the shop’s front business was making inkjet signs, stickers and labels, but it had for years allegedly catered to illegal migrant workers from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
Police said Ekkachai confessed to earning Bt1,000 per card and claimed this was his second batch of fake cards following an initial production of 40-50.
He was charged with forging state documents.

Department of Employment inspector-general Pichit Nilthongkham said fake pink cards turn up occasionally, not often, and pointed out that authentic cards are brighter in colour, have sharper lettering and bear a Singha watermark.
He said a QR scanning code would soon be added in the back of pink cards to help verify their authenticity.
