DWR employee arrested, pills seized in related drug busts

Police who searched a house in Pathum Thani’s Thanya Buri district on Sunday, found 656,000 methamphetamine pills and some fake car licence plates.

The search followed the arrest of a 33-year-old female employee of the Department of Water Resources (DWR) and three others, and the seizure of 400,000 meth pills in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district on Friday.
Following a tip-off about drug smuggling from Central Thailand to the South and then onto Malaysia, police on Friday apprehended the four suspects along with the drugs hidden in secret compartments of their two cars in Hat Yai.
The suspects were named as DWR Surat Thani branch office employee Poonyanuch Boonchit, 33, Samai Oonjai, 39, Benjamas Limsuwan, 28, and Monchai Maneenop, 40. They were charged with possessing drugs with intent to sell.
Police said that Samai yielded information that more drugs were stored at a gang-linked house in Pathum Thani. Provincial Police Region 4 chief Pol Maj-General Somkiat Neuathong alerted Provincial Police Region 1 chief Pol Maj-General Suwat Jaengyodsuk, whose officers raided the house on Sunday.
Pol Captain Somchai Khuadthong of the 42nd Border Patrol Police Command, in his capacity as head of the border police’s narcotic suppression unit, said that his team had spent three months on intelligence gathering and investigations related to the bust.
He claimed that Poonyanuch flashed her DWR identity card when the drug-smuggling car was stopped at a checkpoint in an attempt to evade a search.
