Three worrying farm chemicals, including Paraquat, will remain in use in Thailand as the Hazardous Substance Committee voted Wednesday to restrict their use, but not ban them.

Industry Ministry deputy permanent secretary Somboon Yindeeyoungyuen, who chairs the committee, announced that Paraquat glyphosate and chlorpyrifos did not face the ban because their impacts on health remained debatable.

“We have assigned the Agriculture Ministry to introduce control measures of these chemicals within two months,” he said.

The committee’s resolution has upset many people who worry about the chemicals’ impacts on health.

Paraquat, for example, has already been described as dangerous and banned across the European Union since 2007. Many researches suggest the chemical is linked to Parkinson’s disease.
