Pineapple price plummets, Phetchabun grower giving it away

Pineapple price plummets, Phetchabun grower giving it away

A Phetchabun pineapple grower is giving away the fruit for free in protest over falling prices.

Chaikrit Klaykaew, who owns a 20-rai pineapple plantation in Tambon Camp Son, Khao Kho district, explained on Facebook on Tuesday that he’d lose money shipping the fruit to processing factories.
He said pineapple sells for just Bt1 per kilogram at canning factories, not enough to cover the growers’ costs for harvest labour and transportation.
So he planned to be in downtown Phetchabun on Tuesday evening giving two pineapples for free to every person who wants them.

He said he’d also sell large pineapples for Bt10 each, just to recoup his money spent on petrol and labour.
Chaikrit promised to be in front of the large Buddha statue in Phetbura Buddha Park with two pickup-loads of pineapples.
He said he also gave about a tonne of his crop to Wat Pa Phu Thap Buek on Tuesday morning to make merit after a worshiper there ordered 50 kilograms for Bt1,000.
