Illegal fish traps pulled from Trang bay

Illegal fish traps pulled from Trang bay

Trang Governor Siripat Patkul said on Tuesday he had already ordered the removal of illegal fish traps from Palian Bay.

Local fishermen had complained that outsiders had permanently installed hundreds of “phong-phang” and “sai pap” traps and “poh” fishing stakes.
Designed to catch small fish, crabs, prawns and squid, the traps are illegal because they’re hazardous to protected turtles, dolphins and dugongs and to boat navigation.

Siripat said a district-level committee in charge of suppressing illegal fishing had already visited the area overlapping Palian’s Koh Sukorn and Tha Kham sub-districts and Thung Wa district in neighbouring Satun province.
He acknowledged it was difficult catching the trap fishermen red-handed and urged local people and the news media to keep watch for illegal activity and alert the authorities.
