Koh Payu monkeys get a seafood feast
The deputy director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) on Saturday headed out to Koh Payu, where 80 monkeys were recently released to their new home.
The visit was made to check on their welfare and give them some seafood treats.
On June 21, 80 monkeys, which had already been sterilised, were released onto Koh Payu, off the coast of Phuket.
The island covers an area of 26 rai (4.2 hectares).
Pongchart Chouehorm, director of the Natural and Wildlife Education Centre, and his team also took the short trip out to Koh Payu.
They took some fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood to feed the monkeys that were settling into their new home.
“We were patrolling along the beaches for about two to three hours. About 40 monkeys were seen on the beaches around the island, more than last time we visited them,” he said.
“This time we fed them some seafood. They can learn [from this] to find seafood around the island by themselves,” he added.
DNP deputy director-general Pinsak Suraswadi also visited relocated monkeys at Khao Rang (on Phuket), besides visiting those on Koh Payu.
On Sunday, Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong was also checking on the monkeys at Khao Rang and Khao Toh Sae, also known as Monkey Hill.
The capture/sterilise/rehome programme for some of Phuket’s mischievous monkey population continues.
