Death of boy, 4, ‘not linked to drug haul’

A four-year-old Thai boy, who along with his 60-year-old grandmother had found a bag containing nearly 40,000 methamphetamine pills by the roadside in Buri Ram province early last month, was run over by a pickup truck on Sunday morning while crossing the road, police said.

Following the fatal accident, the truck driver identified only as Saman, 58, waited to testify to police. He said he was driving to Roi Et province when the boy suddenly crossed the road in front of his vehicle before he could slam the brakes. The boy was pronounced dead in hospital. Police were convinced the fatal road accident was not connected with the drug discovery, as the area was the boy’s usual route back home.
On June 17 evening, the boy and his grandmother spotted a pink bag by the main road in Ban Song Phi Nong village, Tambon Sadao, Song Phi Nong district while they were herding their water buffaloes back home. The boy dragged the bag home and when he opened it, he found it stuffed with illicit drugs, which they then handed over to police.
