Pathum Thani zoo to be a ‘Smithsonian’, governor says

The new home for animals from Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo in Pathum Thani is being designed as “the Smithsonian of Southeast Asia”, the province’s governor says.

Phinit Boonlert said the facility in Thanyaburi district – for now known as the Pathum Thani Zoo – would occupy 300 rai in the Klong 6 area.
The Zoological Park Organisation had in June hired consultants to draw up plans within eight months for a zoo that meets international standards, he said.
Visitors will be able to learn about the wildlife and follow up through information links to 18 learning centres and museums in the province.
Phinit said Pathum Thani was “the gateway to Bangkok” and able to serve as a learning hub for Southeast Asia, appealing to both Thais and foreign tourists.
He chaired a meeting this week of associated agencies in the province to discuss the new zoo intended as the future long-term home of animals from Dusit Zoo, which will close by the end of August after 80 years of operation.
The 1,000-plus animals kept at Dusit will initially be housed at zoos in Khao Kheow, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen, according to Dusit Zoo’s Facebook page.
