Dusit Zoo closing delayed until September 30

Dusit Zoo closing delayed until September 30

As a gift to supporters of the Dusit Zoo the organisation behind the much-loved animal enclosure will delay its permanent shuttering in central Bangkok until September 30, the operation announced on Friday. The zoo was originally scheduled to close on August 31.

After the closing date was recently announced, visitors poured into the zoo to bid farewell to the nation’s first and most popular zoo. That led the Zoological Park Organisation to delay the closing by a full month as a gift for those who cherish the zoo.

Dusit Zoo, locally known as Khao Din Wana, celebrated its 80th birthday this year. It was built in the reign of King Rama V as part of Dusit Palace’s royal garden and was opened to the public in 1938. It was later gifted by King Rama X. It is located next to the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Vimarnmek Mansion in Dusit District.
After Dusit Zoo closes, about 1,600 animals will be temporarily transferred to six other zoos across Thailand: Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Chiang Mai Zoo, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, and Khon Kaen.
After the construction of the new zoo in Klong 6, Thanya Buri district of Pathum Thani is complete, the animals will enjoy an area three times the size of Dusit Zoo.
