Govt to allow households to pay utility bills via PromptPay

Govt to allow households to pay utility bills via PromptPay

The government is going to allow households to pay their tap water and electricity bills via the PromptPay channel without being charged a transaction fee, as part of its efforts to promote a cashless society, Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong said on Monday.

The government will also ask banks to waive fees for e-payments worth up to Bt700,000 per transaction, from the current fee-free limit of Bt5,000, beginning in the next few months. After that, the value of fee-free transactions may be raised to Bt2 million a time, the minister said.
The government will also start to give value-added tax rebates for the poor holding welfare cards, from next month, he added.
Since the government initiated the PromptPay service early last year, 44.3 million accounts have been registered with the system and some Bt2.6 trillion worth of e-payments have been made.
