Insurgency link found in killing of elderly furniture-shop couple: police

Police are now convinced that the killing of an elderly couple at their Songkhla furniture shop on Sunday was carried out by an insurgent cell led by Mayokoh Lateh.

A ballistic test found that the 9mm pistol used in the double homicide was linked to several previous insurgency attacks in Pattani’s Khok Pho district
A police source said the cell led by Mayakoh was active in Pattani’s Khok Pho as well as in Songkhla's Thepha district, where the couple’s shop is located, and in Songkhla’s Saba Yoi district.
Songkhla provincial officials meanwhile presented Bt1 million in compensation to relatives of the slain couple, Uthit Chanrat and his wife Boontim Chanrat, both 68, at their funeral. The cremation ceremony was slated for September 8 at a local temple.
The police probe into the killing is focusing on the link to the insurgency in the deep South due to the ballistics result. As well, the couple's furniture shop was among the 10 locations where insurgents carried out simultaneous arson attacks in August 2013.
CCTV footage from the Sunday gun attack showed two assailants on a motorcycle – one of whom was described by witnesses as a “Malay-speaking” gunman in his late 20s – fleeing in the direction of Khok Pho via Saba Yoi.
