The mercury atop Doi Inthanon mountain in Chiang Mai plunged to 5 degrees Celsius amid raining and thick fog on Thursday morning, a senior park official said.

He said the mountaintop was covered with thick fog amid moderate rains throughout the morning. The rain on the mountaintop was measured at 49 millimetres, he said.
The temperature at the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint was about 12C and the rains there were measured at 45mm.
Wasan added that the number of tourists visiting Doi Inthanon has been rising since late last month with an average number of 1,054 a day.
On September 23, the park reported that the temperature on the mountaintop dropped to 6C, signalling the start of the tourist season when visitors flock to enjoy the chilling waters on Doi Inthanon.
