Junior science, math whizzes home from China wrapped in medals

There was a warm welcome at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport early Friday morning for 24 primary-school students who won 25 prizes in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad in China, which ended on October 4.

The students – half competing in mathematics and the rest in science – won 11 gold medals (four in math and seven in science), 12 silvers (seven in math, five in science) and one bronze in math.
St Gabriel’s College Bangkok student Achawin Kittirattanapaiboon was also named Overall Champion in Science.
This competition drew 378 students from 22 countries in Africa, the Middle East and across Asia, including most Southeast Asian nations.
Science champion Achawin said he’d studied hard at school and at home to prepare, aiming to bring Thailand some glory.
The “scariest” challenge he faced came from Singapore, with its impressive track record at such events, he said.
Gold medallist Yanarak Thavornrungkij of Montfort College Primary Section in Chiang Mai declared himself proud and overjoyed with the accomplishment. It was the third medal he’s won at the Olympiad.
