Doi Inthanon sees mercury drop to 6C as tourists return

Early birds were treated to chilling weather atop Thailand’s highest mountain early on Tuesday when the mercury fell to 6 degrees Celsius.

Wasan Chanthep, assistant chief of the Doi Inthanon National Park, said the temperature at the top of Doi Inthanon was measured at 6C, while the temperature at the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint below the summit was 11C.
Wasan said the number of tourists was down, apparently because the temperature plunge occurred during a weekday. About 1,490 visitors are coming to the park each day.
The temperature was 5C at the summit on October 4, and 3C the next day, the lowest so far this winter.
On September 23, the park reported a drop to 6C at the peak, signalling the start of the tourist season when visitors flock to enjoy the famous chilling rains of Doi Inthanon. The view from the mountain is among the best in Thailand.
