Vietnam’s Party cheif Nguyen Phu Trong sworn in as new President

The newly-elected State President Nguyen Phu Trong took an oath of office for the 2016-21 tenure on Tuesday afternoon following the result of a morning vote by deputies of the 14th National Assembly (NA) during their on-going sixth session.

Trong, who is also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam delivered a speech at the ceremony after the National Assembly ratified a resolution on his election.

During the ceremony, which was broadcast live by Vietnam Television and Radio the Voice of Vietnam, Trong vowed to stay absolutely loyal to the nation, the people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to exert every effort to complete all missions assigned by the Party, State and people.

Speaking after the ceremony, he said that the new position was both a great honour and a heavy responsibility, and pledged to work hard to fulfill the promises he had made.

Noting that although Vietnam had reaped great achievements but was still facing many challenges, including unpredictable global developments and the heavy workload at home, especially the preparations for the 13th Party Congress, he expressed his hope for broad support from leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), NA deputies, voters and the people, as well as co-ordination from the NA, Government and VFF agencies, socio-political organisations, judicial bodies and localities.

On behalf of the Party, State, NA, Government and the VFF, NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Vice President Đang Thi Ngoc Thinh, and President of the VFF Central Committee Tran Thanh Man presented flowers to the new President.
