Chiang Mai’s Canadian spray painter gets bail

Chiang Mai’s Canadian spray painter gets bail

A Canadian woman, arrested in Chiang Mai for spraying graffiti on the old city walls, says she is sorry and “terrified about what comes next”.

Brittney Schneider, 22, was in Chiang Mai last Thursday when she said she got “ridiculously drunk”.
Speaking to the Canadian media, she said they were walking back to their hostel when they found a bottle of spray paint. She and a friend from Liverpool in England started spraying graffiti on the brick wall.

“I came to as I finished writing the ‘B’ and I stopped because I knew it was bad,” she told the Canadian Press. She soon came to her senses “but it was already too late”.
A security camera shows Schneider from Grande Prairie, Alberta, and 23-year-old Furlong Lee, spraying near the famous Tha Pae Gate.
The gate, originally built in the 13th century and then rebuilt and renovated a number of times, is part of the wall around central Chiang Mai.

The pair were charged with vandalising, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of Bt1 million.
The police say Lee admitted that he wrote “Scouser Lee” on the wall. Scouser is an informal term for a Liverpudlian.
Schneider wrote the letter “B” underneath it.
They then returned to their hostel and went to sleep, according to Schneider.
