Fisherman drowns in canal, still tied to his haul

A man drowned in a canal in Samut Songkram's Muang district while fishing for prawns on Thursday night.

Muang Samut Songkram police were told at 9pm that the fisherman had disappeared in the Bang Rua Hak Canal, Moo 6 village, Tambon Thai Haad.
Police and rescuers from the Sawang Benjatham Samut Songkram Foundation went to the scene and found a boat tied to a tree on the canal's bank.
The foundation’s divers spent about half an hour combing the canal's bed before finding him ten metres from the boat. A net containing about five kilograms of prawns was still tied to his waist.
Police named the man as Nathee Puangkit, 53. His friends told officers he had been going to the canal to catch prawns every night.
