Bangkok governor defends deputy over allegations

Bangkok governor defends deputy over allegations

BANGKOK Governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang yesterday fiercely defended one of his deputies, Jakkapan Phiewngam, who is facing an allegation of abuse of authority.

“He is the most hard-working deputy governor. If he has to leave his post, he will do that when I leave,” Aswin said.
He was speaking after the National Anti-Corruption Commission nudged him to look into allegations that Jakkapan had abused his authority to cancel the registration of a road as a public road reportedly in favour of a condo project.
The 150-metre-long road, which stretches from Rama IV Road to the Siva Prathan Foundation in Bang Rak district, had been registered as a public road for about two decades before Jakkapan allegedly cancelled its status in favour of the Whizdom Chinatown condo project.
The cancellation apparently took place when locals began complaining that the construction of the 33-storey condo was blocking the road.
However, records show that Jakkapan signed the cancellation in response to the opinions of a committee that was established to look into the complaint.
“I will look into the details,” Aswin said, adding that though he had the power to dismiss his deputy he had no intentions to do so.
He also added that the BMA permanent secretary did not have the authority to launch an investigation against Jakkapan either.
